I’ve long suspected that I’m intolerant of or sensitive to wheat, but I always found something else to blame for my stomach issues. I can’t eat early in the morning. I’m lactose intolerant (true). I forgot my probiotics. I’m stressed. The list goes on. Basically, I didn’t want to give up wheat. I love wheat, and wheat products. I couldn’t imagine my life without macaroni and cheese, goldfish crackers, and banana bread (or any kind of bread).
A friend suggested I read Wheat Belly: Lose the Wheat, Lose the Weight, and Find Your Path Back to Health by Dr. William Davis. Whoa. I’ll admit I skipped a lot of the 1st section – the history of wheat is not an easy bedtime read – but overall it was an eye opener. I wasn’t more than halfway through when I decided that my health was worth more to me than macaroni and cheese… at least a shot.
I’m now 1 week in to my experiment. I feel… okay.
The first 3 days were awful. I was tired. No. Exhausted. I felt sick and grumpy and sensitive to the most minor irritations. My poor husband.
It got better. I’ll admit that I was disappointed to wake up this morning still feeling tired. But as a woman with a full-time job, a family, and a growing business to run, I suppose that tired is just my state of being.
For now I’m just grateful that 3 of my favorite things are gluten free:
- Chocolate
- Potato chips
- Fruits & Veggies!
